COOFA

Sandoná, Nariño
Tejeduría

This organization was created in 1985 and is led by 36 craftswomen, who are rural heads of household that coordinate agricultural and handicraft work. From the beginning, they sought to provide a platform to directly sell their handicrafts and, in this way, make Sandoná’s handicrafts known across Colombia. They work to pass down their wisdom from generation to generation and they participate in fairs every year. In addition to its members, the cooperative also buys handicrafts from women who are not members when they do not manage to complete production. This increases the number of craftswomen they benefit to 80 women. They have received training in design, marketing, and management from Artesanías de Colombia, and the cooperative is a solid source of employment for women, which has enabled iraca palm cultivation to continue.
