In 1978, the Colombian government established March 19th as National Artisan’s Day through Artesanías de Colombia.

The Medalla a la Maestría Artesanal (Artisanal Mastery Medal) is awarded as part of this celebration in acknowledgement of the people, companies and artisan communities that stand out in Colombia for their excellence in their craft and for continuing the craft tradition.

Those who receive this award elevate the trade to which they have devoted their lives and are able to keep their traditions alive. Furthermore, this award recognizes their trajectory and their work’s excellence. Moreover, it honors Colombian crafts in general, which are recognized as part of the country’s intangible heritage. This acknowledgement gives us the opportunity to spread the tradition and history of the country’s crafting sector by honoring its creators.
